Future Black Planners of America Workshop at Florida Atlantic University
On July 21, 2018, eleven high school students, engaged and intrigued about the field of urban planning, attended a workshop sponsored by Gigi the Planner and SURP.
|During the workshop, the students learned key information from five planning professionals. Each briefly spoke about their background in planning and how they got into the field. Students learned what urban planning is, where urban planners work and what they earn, where to earn a degree, and more. They also learned about basic zoning and land use in preparation for a small group activity.|
|In the second part of the day, the students split into 5 groups with the planning professionals as facilitators and worked on a parcel development project. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the project, and they put together a proposal for vacant pieces of property in the City of Boca Raton. The students then presented their proposals to the entire group.|
|Each project was judged on set criteria, and the individuals from the winning group received a $25 gift card. At the conclusion of the workshop, each youth received a community service hours certificate and giveaways (T-shirt, wristband, and a button pin).
