Dessau Study Abroad Program


Study architecture in Dessau, Germany, a birthplace of modernism. In cooperation with FAU, the Anhalt University of Applied Science in Dessau, Germany offers students of FAU School of Architecture the opportunity to study German architecture, culture, and art. The Dessau Summer School of Architecture conducts courses in the Walter Gropius-designed Bauhaus building, where from 1925 to 1932, Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Josef Albers, and Mies van der Rohe, among others, pioneered new design concepts and teaching methods, indelibly influencing modern architecture and allied arts and crafts. The Dessau summer program, led by Professor Stephan Pinkau, develops a framework, reinterpreting Bauhaus themes like the relationship between architecture and art, with a new design investigation offered each summer. In 2018, the project will be the redesign and addition to the Huysburg Monastery complex, which includes structures dating back to the year 1080. 

Design, drawing, and culture & architecture seminar, taught in English, equivalent to six transferable credits (two three-credit ARC 4930 courses) make up the summer curriculum. The program begins with a workshop in cooperation with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, followed by a studio closely connected to this context.

Excursions to significant modern architectural sites, both close and far, are included in the itinerary. Beyond that, Dessau’s location in the heart of Europe makes rail and car travel to other historic cities, such as Amsterdam, Paris, Copenhagen, and Vienna, very convenient. 

The program runs from May 28 to July 6, 2018. Housing is provided on the Anhalt University campus, with two students sharing one furnished room and bathroom. Program fee is € 1000 (euros), which includes tuition, housing, weekday meals, two weekend excursions, excursion travel cost, lodging for weekend excursions. The application is a two-step process. First, email a portfolio (10 pages maximum) and letter of intent (pdf format only) by November 13, 2017 to The brief statement should, in 250 words, explain what your interest is in the program and the impact you think the program will have on your professional development. Selected students will be informed by December 1, leaving time to complete the FAU Education Abroad online application. Full FAU application details will be available at the end of October, 2017.
