Ross Deuchar, Ph.D.
Dr. Ross Deuchar is an Affiliate Professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University. He is recognized internationally for his groundbreaking work on youth violence, gang culture and crime as well as procedural justice in policing and on gang distance and violence reduction strategies. He has published numerous articles in international, peer-reviewed journals on his ethnographic and qualitative work that has been conducted in Scotland, the USA and various parts of Europe and Asia. He is the author of four books and co-editor of one, and his work is widely cited in a number of peer-reviewed journal articles and other books. His extensive experience of working with violent offenders, international police agencies and youth work teams means that he is often called upon by the broadcast media as a commentator, with TV appearances in recent years in the UK on ‘Scotland Today’, ‘The Politics Show’, Channel 5’s ‘Britain’s Crime Capitals’; in the USA on the WKRC ‘Local 12 News’ in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has also been interviewed by the Danish online magazine ‘Videnskab.dk’. In 2010 he was runner-up for the Economic and Social Research Council’s prestigious Michael Young Prize in recognition of his research into gang culture, and during spring trimester 2016/17, he was the Fulbright scholar-in-residence at Florida Atlantic University.
